MEDICAL tourism is picking up steam, with the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council targeting RM1.3 bil revenue from the industry this year.

The projection is for one million medical tourists from Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Myanmar and India. This is a projected revenue growth of about 30% from last year’s 900,000 medical tourists who contributed more than RM1 bil.

Malaysia and Singapore are hubs for medical tourists from Asean countries. For Malaysia, the majority of medical tourists come from Indonesia and contributed 70% to revenue last year.

The top five medical treatments sought here are cardiology, oncology, orthopaedic, IVF and blood-related treatments.
