Abolish intracity toll collection instead
FocusM | 04 Jan 2019 00:30
THE announcement of the toll hike freeze on all highways, at a cost of RM994.43 mil, may have brought some new year cheer to all road users in the country. This is in addition to the toll hike freeze of intracity highway tolls, as announced in the tabling of Budget 2019 last November.

However, while this is moving closer to abolishing all tolls within five years, as per the Pakatan Harapan election manifesto, some are still disappointed.

The main grouse of the rakyat is that the cost of living is rising. It also doesn’t help that traffic congestion in the Klang Valley has worsened with the opening of more offices and shopping malls.

More than that, the rakyat are wondering if compensation need to be paid to toll concessionaires in the first place. The toll concession agreements are mostly classified under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) by the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government. Most of the highways were constructed during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s time as prime minister under BN. Hence, Mahathir knows well the details of the agreements with the concessionaires.
