News of investors being duped is nothing new. Recently, a local daily reported that authorities shut down the VenusFX forex scheme which allegedly cheated more than 23,000 people of some RM80 mil.

Thousands of others have similarly seen their hard earned savings or retirement funds vanish after investing in a myriad of get-rich-quick schemes.

One of the most infamous is the Genneva gold investment scheme. It is pending a final outcome in court as the prosecution appeals against the acquittal of 11 people charged with more then 1,000 counts of money laundering and illegal deposit taking.

Over the years, billions have been invested in various scams, according to media and other reports.
