Doing well in business is not always about leading big companies or making big profits. It’s also about wielding influence in the corporate sector, both at home and abroad.

A well-known politician once said “the greatest ability in business is to get along with others and influence their actions”.

In this Focus List, we bring you 10 individuals who wield power and clout in their respective business sectors as well as on the economy. In other words, they make a huge impact on corporate Malaysia.

Most of these individuals have a direct or indirect influence over billions in terms of market capitalisation of companies.

The change of government after the 14th General Election (GE14) on May 9 resulted in the return of former politicians and bureaucrats to take up key influential positions.

Tun Daim Zainuddin, 80, became the chairman of the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP), which is tasked with advising the new Pakatan Harapan government in shaping policies and programmes in its first 100 days.

Daim is perhaps the fourth most influential person after Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Prime Minister in waiting, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
