Plantation management: Going back to basics

Recently, at the 20th anniversary dinner of the Malaysian Palm Oil Association (MPOA), I was at the same table as a 96-year-old planter, V. Ranganathan.
MPOA was a merger of many associations, representing large employers like Sime Darby, Felda, IOI Corporation and KL-Kepong. It was simpler for the government to deal with one body, listen to the issues and work out how the problems could be solved.
The issues, of course, are familiar and were again mentioned by MPOA chairman Datuk Franki Anthony Dass in his speech. They relate to labour shortage, which is a big reason why yields are not improving; low prices because of high stocks; and the slow growth of the world economy.
