Protecting election integrity in Semenyih
Akhbar Satar | 22 Feb 2019 00:30
The state by-election in Semenyih is around the corner. Given this, it is appropriate if all political parties contesting in this election engage in clean and fair campaigns. Integrity and fairness in electoral campaigns are crucial to ensure that corruption does not damage the credibility of an election and its outcome, thereby undermining the due democratic process enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

Any case of electoral fraud, corruption and money politics committed by any of the candidates or by the political parties in the Semenyih by-election will be investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) while the police will focus on security matters.

The MACC, meanwhile, has set up a special operations centre for the public to report instances of abuse of power and corruption in the Semenyih by-election. The centre, which will operate 24 hours a day, is located on the ground floor of Menara MPKj, Jalan Cempaka Putih in Kajang. The public can channel any complaints of corruption and misuse of power via email to prksemenyih@ sprm.gov.my or call 016-988 0782 or 03-5525 6500, fax 03-5525 6514.

The MACC will take stern action against any political party and its members who are found to have been using inducement as a means to buy votes. It will definitely closely monitor the campaign activities of the candidates and their agents to ensure that no one violates the rules, regulations and ethics of election campaigning.
