Just scrap the HSR project
FocusM | 19 Apr 2019 00:30
We are now paying the price for the folly of the previous government for embarking on the RM66bil East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project.

Since cancelling the mega project would have cost the government RM21 bil in compensation, it decided to renegotiate the terms and brought down the cost from RM66 bil to RM44 bil. But the fact remains that the project will never be profitable after its completion.

So it is a wise decision by the current government to put on hold another mega project - the RM110 bil High Speed Rail (HSR) from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore. Compared to the ECRL’s original cost of RM66 bil, the HSR project is even more extravagant, although generally high-speed rail projects cost more.

It was reported that the Japanese could carry out the same project at half the cost. In any case, when the YTL Group mooted a similar HSR project 13 years ago in 2006, it cost a mere RM8 bil.
