Ridiculous to ask online media to moderate comment
FocusM | 15 Mar 2019 00:30
THE government really needs to cut online media owners some slack. It’s one thing to say they are responsible for what they write, but to imply that they should also be responsible for the comments of readers is misguided.

It is indeed suprising that Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo is pushing for the moderation of online comments. He wants online media owners to moderate and censor readers’ comments that touch on sensitive issues. While the minister acknowledges that freedom of expression needs to be preserved, he says those making comments online have to be responsible.

Gobind was quoted as saying: “…asking portals to moderate the content in their commentary section is not unreasonable. In essence, it reinforces the fact that we uphold the right to free speech but reiterate the need for responsibility to be attached to it.”
