Can IHH conquer Fort India?

Seventeen years have passed since IHH Healthcare Bhd broke ground in India. But the battle to run a profitable
venture on the subcontinent is far from over as Asia’s largest healthcare provider continues to bleed red ink.

Losses for the India segment widened in 1HFY19 to RM134 mil from RM19.6 mil for the same period last year. But what has kept analysts in a tizzy is IHH’s need to continually make more provisions in growing its India business, particularly the acquisition of Fortis Healthcare group.

To be sure, growing India is very much on the agenda. “IHH is committed to growing in India. As the country’s second-largest healthcare operator, we continue to build on our leadership position and deliver world-class clinical excellence and care to our patients. We are focused on improving the operational and financial performance of Fortis, while further ramping up our existing India operations.” a company spokesperson tells FocusM.
