“The first few years after Tan Sri Tan Kean Soon and I came in were challenging as we had to clean up a lot of things,” recalls T7 Global Bhd chairman Datuk Seri Nik Norzrul Thani. “That is now water under the bridge and we are focused on moving forward. It was not an easy route but we managed to turn around,” he tells FocusM.

Indeed, things are picking up for the company. It recently bagged contracts from Petronas Carigali and Vestigo Petroleum and is diversifying into the aerospace industry. It is also eyeing a slice of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) should the huge project proceed.

Back in 2014, Tan, who is deputy executive chairman, came into Tanjung Offshore Bhd. A while later the company found itself mired in controversy that pitched Tan against some of his fellow board members. He was removed from the board but fought back, teaming up with Nik Norzrul in 2015. The duo together with Datin Norhafizah Mohd Nordin engineered a hostile takeover not long after.

Upon taking over, the duo knew they had to take some painful steps to rehabilitate the company. Nik Norzrul says the management had to undertake kitchen sinking exercises, amongst others, that first year.
