GrabPay, Grab’s in-app e-wallet, is expanding its breath of offline and online merchants nationwide. The list includes a variety of merchants such as hypermarkets (Giant, Tesco and Mydin), health and beauty retailers (Watsons and Guardian), cinema outlet (MBO Cinemas), fast food chains (Dominos), convenience stores (99 Speedmart) and other retailers such as Zalora and Petron (by 15th November 2019).
The expansion of the merchant network will automatically make cashless payments via GrabPay more widely accessible nationwide, compared to the previously eight cities GrabPay was available in.
This expansion is part of Grab’s vision to meet the everyday needs of consumers in major cities and townships across the nation while driving the national agenda of nurturing a cashless culture in Malaysia. The addition of almost 3,600 number of touchpoints to GrabPay’s fast growing number of merchants is a testament of the e-wallet’s commitment to provide Malaysians, regardless of their location, access to the seamless and frictionless convenience of digital payments.
Ooi Huey Tyng, Managing Director of GrabPay Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, said, “As Malaysia’s homegrown and Southeast Asia’s leading e-wallet, we want to grow a digitally savvy community and be the everyday, everything e-wallet for our users. Our strategic alliance with like-minded partners such as Maybank and Paynet (DuitNow QR), and with these household brands, is just one example of how we are innovating our e-wallet to meet our consumers needs while growing the cashless culture especially in Malaysia through a single platform that they are already familiar with using it to book their rides or order food.”
A Cash-lite Malaysia
In line with the recent announcement of the 2020 National Budget, the focus to increase the adoption of cashless payments in Malaysia resonates with Grab’s vision of leveraging on technology to benefit the masses, which is to improve digital inclusion and literacy, and to empower micro-entrepreneurs and SMEs.
A progressive, cashless economy would not only benefit consumers but also help micro-entrepreneurs and SMEs grow their business without the cost, burden and safety concerns that comes with managing cash. According to Bank Negara, the adoption of electronic based payments can save Malaysia upto 1% of the country’s GDP (estimated more than RM3 billion) due to the cost of cash-based transactions.
