Bersatu reaffirms decision to axe Mahathir & allies

THE Bersatu Supreme Council yesterday reaffirmed its decision to revoke the membership of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and four others.

Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainuddin said in a statement outlining the meeting last night that Mahathir, his son Mukhriz, Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, Maszlee Malik and Amiruddin Hamzah had their memberships “automatically nullified” for sitting on the opposition bench during the Dewan Rakyat sitting on May 18.

That act had led to their membership being revoked, according to the party’s constitution clauses 10.2.2 and 10.2.3. “The interpretation of the clauses by the supreme council is final,” Hamzah said.

Bersatu would also carry on with the Perikatan Nasional government and severe its ties with the Pakatan Harapan coalition as decided during a meeting on Feb 23.

PN is a loose coalition consisting of Bersatu, Umno, PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak.

This decision to form PN had led to a tussle between Muhyiddin and Mahathir which ultimately led to the collapse of the PH government, after less than two years in office.

The termination had been contested by Mahathir and his men. They deemed it invalid.

Hamzah also said he was the party’s secretary-general, not Marzuki Yahya, who was removed from the post through a March 18 letter, “according to the party’s constitution.”
