A LEADING consumer advocate has urged the Government to extend Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador’s tenure for one more year.
“This is about national security and Hamid’s tenure extension is much needed in this war against our internal enemies of the state.
“Let him set up a high-powered team to go to ‘war’ against those who threaten us,” Consumer Association of Subang & Shah Alam (Cassa) president Datuk Jacob George told FocusM.
Last month, Hamid revealed that there was “cartel of young police officers” who were plotting to oust him, due to the former’s uncompromising stand against corruption and officers working in cahoots with crime syndicate.
However, the IGP ruled out the need for a royal commission to investigate the matter, claiming the situation was “under control”.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had also indicated that it would not investigate the matter, adding it was an “internal” police issue.
Touching on the matter, George said that throughout his career as a consumer advocate, he had the privilege to work with many Home Ministers and IGPs, in the span of 40 years.
“Our relationship has been cordial and with mutual respect. They have always protected me when I addressed many critical and controversial issues.
“During the time, my car was vandalised by cartels involved in sand thefts, scams and others engaged in the back economy.
“And the good relationship continues with current Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamah Zainuddin and Hamid,” he said.
Heaping laurels on Hamid, George said the former was a respectable man, adding his professionalism and zero tolerance to corruption should be emulated by everyone in the country.
“As such, I’m delighted to hear Hamid’s assurance that he will not allow any parties with vested interest to control the force.
“And he was brave to state what many of us have suspected long ago but unable to do anything. Therefore, we cannot allow these movements to undermine Hamid,” George stressed.
Hamid is scheduled for retirement in May this year. – Apr 3, 2021.
