Agong: Stop politicking, support Budget 2021

DEWAN Rakyat members are urged to support the upcoming Budget 2021 to help the public and revive the economy to weather the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It is important to get Budget 2021 approved as it will help the government, the authorities and our front liners to stem the rise in COVID-19,” said Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

The statement yesterday was issued by Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Indera Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, on behalf of the Agong.

Earlier this week, the Agong, with the advise of the Malay Rulers, rejected Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s proposal for the monarch to declare an Emergency due to the spike in COVID-19 cases.

After rejecting Muhyiddin’s proposal, the Agong urged politicians, from both sides, to stop playing politics and work towards combating the pandemic.

Put aside petty squabbles

While many seem to have heeded the Agong’s advise, Umno held a supreme council meeting two days ago to decide whether to continue supporting the Muhyiddin’s led Perikatan Nasional coalition or otherwise.

On that note, the Agong again called upon politicians stop playing politics and prioritise the people’s needs, who are suffering in terms of health and economics due to the ongoing pandemic.

“I urge all MPs to put aside their political squabbles and personal interests. Only the people will suffer if things continue as it is,” he said.

Earlier today, Muhyiddin sought an audience with the Agong, prior to a Cabinet meeting. The prime minister had briefed the Agong on Budget 2021 and plans to step up efforts to combat COVID-19.

“I have full confidence in the prime minister’s ability in steering the country out of the current crisis faced by my subjects,” he said. – Oct 29, 2020
