Anwar challenged to reveal his list of supporters

FOLLOWING Anwar’s claim yesterday of having a strong and indisputable support from MPs and intentions to form a new government, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said that he is still the country’s legitimate prime minister and that the ruling of Perikatan Nasional remains strong.

Muhyiddin insists that the opposition leader’s claims were merely words ‘unless proven otherwise’.

In light of the current situation, Perikatan parties have begun rallying around the prime minister and labelled Anwar as ‘power crazy’.

“All the parties working together in Perikatan such as Barisan, Bersatu, PAS, GPS, PBS and STAR are standing strong in support of the government led by the prime minister,” the parties said in a joint statement released yesterday.

“As such, this coalition that forms the Perikatan government denies the claim by Anwar that he apparently has the majority to form the government. His statement is just cheap publicity that has been done time and time before. His latest action exemplifies his greedy and power-crazy behaviour,” the statement continued.

In a press conference yesterday, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirms that no one from the PAS party is giving support to Anwar in his endeavour.

“There is not a single person from PAS that is giving support on Anwar’s claims. We have always backed the Perikatan government and there has not been any intention to provide support to any others. With that, I would like to see him list down the names that he claims to have support from,” he said during the press conference.

The same cannot be said about UMNO and Barisan Nasional, since The Star reported UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he received information that many MPs from those two parties have voiced their support for Anwar to form a new government.

Despite that, Ahmad Zahid respects their decision to do so and he said the parties could not prevent them from supporting Anwar.

“UMNO and Barisan are not officially part of Perikatan Nasional,” he said. “Support for the Perikatan government is based on the support of individual MPs only.”

In addition to that, another article by The Star showed Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu saying that all MPs from the party are in support of the PKR president.

“Amanah confirms that all its 11 MPs will fully support the leadership of Anwar as the Pakatan president and have given him our trust to form a new government,” Mohamad Sabu said in a statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, The Edge Singapore reported that former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad said he plans to ‘wait and see’ what materialises from Anwar’s claim.

“We will have to wait to see if this is another episode of making claims that cannot be substantiated,” he said via Zoom at Nutanix’s Asean CIO Virtual Summit yesterday. – Sept 24, 2020
