SPIKES in confirmed cases at the Bukit Jalil detention centre and the Pedas cluster saw the number of confirmed cases in Malaysia climbing up again, to 93, with the two clusters making up 91 of the 93 cases.

At Bukit Jalil, 1,545 have been screened, with 338 cases confirmed. All of them are non-Malaysians. 32 reported negative while 1,175 are still pending their results.

At the Pedas cluster, the 36 new cases bring the local total to 256, 14 of whom are Malaysians. Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah noted that the 36 new cases were found while they were in quarantine, and that there is no danger to the public.

The 93 new cases confirmed today bring the total number of confirmed cases to 7,970, with 1,324 active transmission cases. Of the active cases, six are in intensive care units, with two of them needing ventilator support.

61 new recoveries were reported as well, bringing the total number of discharged patients to 6,531. No deaths were reported, keeping the death toll at 115.

Dr Noor Hisham urged employers, especially those hiring migrant workers, to ensure that their staff follow the guidelines. This includes educating them on personal hygiene, the workplace and their living areas, while providing accommodation that is conducive to safe social distancing, and screening staff for Covid-19, especially those working in construction or security in red zones.

For staff in yellow and green zones, employers are encouraged to take the initiative to screen them.

On the reopening of schools, Dr Noor Hisham said the standard operating procedures are in place. He also noted that the priority will be students in Forms 5 and 6 who will be sitting for examinations soon.

Dr Noor Hisham also confirmed that there is still no indication when schools are reopening but promised that there will be two weeks’ notice before they do so. – June 3, 2020
