DATASONIC Group Bhd will be bidding for the Home Ministry’s i-Kad project for migrant workers which sources say is worth RM500 mil.

Datasonic COO Danny Chew Chi Hong confirmed this with FocusM and said that the group would be bidding as it has an established track record in providing secure ID solutions for the government sector as well as financial institutions. Datasonic, according to Chew, had a market share of more than 70%.

“The i-Kad tender requires the tender company to have experience in providing card supply and software application development and must be a 100% bumiputera company in order to qualify for participation. Therefore, Datasonic meets all the requirements,” he said.

The tender, according to a source, is said to be worth “about RM500 mil,” with the deadline for submission being June 5. The project is to provide 10 million units of i-Kad to the Home Ministry. This includes a secure web and mobile-based application.

Chew added that Datasonic had “ample experience in managing mission-critical national projects for the Malaysian government.”

And should it be awarded the tender, Datasonic would be able to finance the project using internal funds as well as loans from their principal banks, said Chew.

Datasonic is currently the sole provider of the MyKad since 2012, and is the sole provider of the Malaysian e-Passport since 2016. It is also the personalisation solution provider for Europay, Mastercard and Visa in Malaysia to more than 10 local and foreign banks. – May 21, 2020
