Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) has stopped issuing liquor licences effective immediately.
Action will be taken against premises that continue to sell alcohol without a permit, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall said in a statement today.
DBKL’s move comes on the back of Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa’s tweet yesterday calling for a freeze in permits following incidents of fatal road accidents involving drunk drivers. DBKL is under the purview of Annuar’s ministry.
Annuar said new permits should be frozen until a guideline and legal revisions could be finalised.
“With accidents involving drunk drivers, it is apt to freeze the issuance of new permits for alcohol retailing until a guideline and legal revision are done. The premises licensing from the local authorities must be tightened,” he tweeted yesterday. – June 2, 2020
