NAP 2020 to focus on next-generation vehicles

By Xavier Kong

THE National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020 will be focused on next-generation vehicles, mobility as a service, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with ties to the advancement of the automotive and aftermarket industry as a whole.

This was revealed at the launch of the latest iteration of the NAP today, graced by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at Menara MITI.

“The automotive industry goes beyond mere car manufacturing. It complements other industries and industrial sectors. The technologies needed in a car open new opportunities for other sectors, making it one of the most important and strategic contributing factors to the manufacturing sector,” said Mahathir.

The National Automotive Vision, which drives the NAP, aims to make Malaysia a regional leader in automotive technologies and to be sustainable.

“The NAP will have much support and compliments, but also criticism. We share a responsibility to build our country,” said Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Darell Leiking, who also called for support and cooperation with the government to make NAP 2020 a success.

The new Malaysian vehicle project is also expected to contribute to the Malaysian economy through both the upstream and downstream segments, according to Mahathir.
