Sunway commits RM34 mil to help those affected by Covid-19

SUNWAY Group has pledged over RM34 mil to help Malaysians adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement today, group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah said this includes Covid-19 patients who have lost their jobs because of the disease and non-essential retailers who have had to suspend their business operations.

“This also includes Sunway employees who have been affected, our frontline healthcare staff and other employees within the Sunway healthcare division who are at risk while serving national interests, as well as the B40 communities.

“We stand alongside Malaysians in these trying times. We are all in this together and we can overcome this crisis as a nation,” he said.

The group has donated RM1 mil to the national Covid-19 fund and contributed RM300,000 to Yayasan Kebajikan Negara to help B40 beneficiaries nationwide.

The Sunway Healthcare Group will also be taking in non-Covid-19 cases from the Ministry of Health (MoH) and the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) hospitals, setting aside a total of 100 beds in Sunway Medical Centre and Sunway Medical Centre Velocity for the purpose.

It will be allocating up to RM12 mil to cover the cost of subsidising treatments for these patients, who will be received at existing government rates.

Additionally, the group has also offered RM20 mil rent-free to Sunway Malls’ non-essential trade retailers during the movement control order (MCO) period.

The MCO, which came into force on March 18, has been extended to April 14 by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to curb the spread of the highly-contagious respiratory disease.

Meanwhile, Sunway Group said Cheah has been appointed by the Prime Minister to serve on the Economic Action Council (EAC) — a special task force formed to find ways to stimulate the economy and to come up with short- and medium-term plans to ensure economic growth.

The EAC is also instrumental in taking additional necessary actions for the delivery of the nation’s Economic Stimulus Package in light of the Covid-19 outbreak. — March 27, 2020, Bernama
