TNB Jimah East’s 2nd high-tech coal plant powers up

KUALA LUMPUR: The second of two coal-fired power plants owned and run by Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) subsidiary Jimah East Power Sdn Bhd (JEP) commenced commercial operation on Dec 27.

In a statement, TNB said the powering up of the 1,000 megawatt (MW) plant has boosted energy supply in the peninsula to 25,981 MW.

JEP’s first 1,000 MW power plant began commercial operation on Aug 22 this year.

“Both plants use ultra-supercritical (USC) technology, a coal-burning technology with 40% efficiency, compared with the conventional coal-fired power plant which has 36% efficiency,” said TNB.

TNB’s two other USC coal-fired plants are Manjung 4 and Manjung 5 at the Sultan Azlan Shah Power Station in Lumut, Perak.

TNB has a 70% stake in JEP while Mitsui & Co Ltd and The Chugoku Electric Power Co Ltd each have 15%. – Dec 30, 2019 Bernama
