Anwar seeks audience with Agong to form a new government

OPPOSITION leader Anwar Ibrahim announced in a press conference earlier today that he has a ‘strong, formidable and convincing’ support from members of the Parliament that will be enough to form the next government.

“I have been approached by a number of MPs from various parties who expressed their deep dissatisfaction with the current leadership. They recognise that the country must have a strong, stable and accountable leadership to manage the crisis and to do so with compassion and concern for the plight of all people struggling in the pandemic,” Anwar said in his speech at the press conference held on Sept 23, 2020 at the Le Meridien Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

“They have expressed their support for me to take over the government now,” he continued.

In his statement, the PKR president voiced out his plans to seek an audience with His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al’Mustafa Billah Shah and present his case as a majority of the MPs supporting him are Malay and Muslim.

The meeting was supposed to happen on Sept 21, 2020 (Tuesday) but it was postponed since the King is currently being treated at the National Heart Institute.

Anwar also mentioned during the press conference that considering the indisputable support backing him up, the government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has now fallen.

“I will meet with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong when he regains his health and will provide more information to the public about what happens next,” he said.

Anwar added that he has every intention to form a new government with integrity and commitment to address the crisis that befell the country and to put an end to corruption and fight for the wellbeing of the people.

“This government will represent all people, with the majority being Malay-Bumiputra and fair representation of all races in the country,” he added.

According to a news article by MalaysiaKini, parties PKR, DAP and Amanah currently have 91 seats.

“Warisan, Upko and Pejuang have 15, while Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB)’s two MPs and independent Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman are also not aligned with the PN government,” said the article.

If combined, the opposition block would have more than enough to overthrow the current government to make way for a new one.

“Regardless of whether he has a strong majority or not, the Federal Constitution puts the power in the hands of the Agong to decide whether to ask a prime minister who has lost support to resign, or to dissolve Parliament,” the article added. – Sept 23, 2020
