Special Parliamentary Select Committee crucial to protect women rights in Malaysia

WOMEN’S Aid Organisation (WAO) urges the House Committee to endorse the establishment of the Special Select Committee on Women’s Affair, Children and Social Development.

According to an article by The Star on Sept 17, 2020, only eight Special Select Committees will be formed.

If passed, it will take effect in November, whereas the Special Select Committee on Women’s Affair, Children and Social Development is still up for consideration.

This is seen to be a regressive step away from ensuring that the rights and dignity of women are protected and realised.

The establishment of this Special Select Committee is not only necessary in securing the rights and well-being of women in Malaysia, it can also prove that the Malaysian government is totally committed to improve and uphold the rights of women through legislation and a change in the system.

“We have been informed that Lanang MP Alice Lau Kiong Yieng proposed the establishment of the special select committee and this has been endorsed by the speaker of the House of Representatives,” WAO said in a Sept 18 note.

“Thus, we call upon the House Committee the other five MPs, namely Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, Arau MP Shahidan Kassim, Kuala Krai MP Abdul Latif Abdul Rahman, Bintulu MP Tiong King Song as well was Lumut MP Mohd Hatta Md Ramli to verify and and confirm that they will push for the establishment of the Special Select Committee on Women’s Affair, Children and Social Development. – Sept 21, 2020
