Two PKR MPs “leap” to Perikatan, Muhyiddin has a slim majority now

IN a boost to his dicey hold on the Dewan Rakyat, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that two PKR MPs have quit their party and threw their support behind the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Government.

“Today, I received statutory declarations (SD) from two Opposition MPs indicating support towards the Government.

“The SDs, from Julau MP, Larry Sng Wei Shien and Tebrau MP, Steven Choong Shiau Yoon were signed and delivered to me after an event earlier today.

“Alhamdulillah, the support will strengthen the PN Government in our effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and revitalise the economy,” he said, in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, PKR secretary general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that there were moves by certain quarters to lure MPs out from the party, using the carrot and stick approach.

“This has happened because the current Government has lost majority support in Parliament, and Istana Negara has announced that the Parliament can sit during the Emergency.

“PKR condemns these desperate moves to make our MPs quit the party to become independent, or join the Government, through threats or rewards,” he was reported saying.

Najib, voters will remember

Earlier today, Sng, who is also Sarawak PKR chief, announced his departure from the party while Choong went incommunicado for several hours before was found handing over his SD to Muhyiddin.

Last month, Umno MPs Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz and Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub withdrew support from PN, leaving Muhyiddin with less than the 112-majority needed to head the Government. However, Sng and Choong’s support will give the Pagoh MP a slim majority to continue.

On related matter, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak made a veiled criticism against party-hopping, adding it would only incur the people’s wrath.

“During the 14th General Election, there were options given on getting “frogs” in and other more drastic ideas.

“But when the public sentiment is against you, any desperate attempt to cling on to power forcefully will be cursed and remembered by the voters forever. No one will be spared during the Day of the Judgement,” the Pekan MP stated. – Feb 28, 2021.
