Bersatu purges Mahathir & his allies from party

By Emmanuel Samarathisa

BERSATU has initiated a slew of measures that signal the party’s intentions to purge itself of co-founder Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and men aligned to the former prime minister, according to memos sighted by FocusM.

Firstly, a Bersatu supreme council meeting will be convened today at the Persatuan Alumni Universiti Malaya’s Clubhouse in Kuala Lumpur at 8.30 pm, according to a notice signed by Bersatu organising secretary Suhaimi Yahya.

“Agenda for the meeting will follow,” the notice said.

Secondly, Bersatu president and acting chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has sacked Penang Bersatu chief Marzuki Yahya and supreme council member Akhramsyah Muamar Ubaidah Sanusi effective June 2.

“I thank you and appreciate your contributions and your service throughout your tenure in the post,” Muhyiddin wrote in the letters. Marzuki still contends that he, not Hamzah Zainuddin, is the Bersatu secretary-general.

Muhyiddin and Mahathir have locked horns since Feb when the former decided to pull Bersatu out from Pakatan Harapan, leading to the collapse of the coalition and the government.

This triggered a week-long political crisis with Muhyiddin emerging as prime minister on March 1 followed by a loose pact called Perikatan Nasional which consists of Bersatu, Umno, PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak. – June 4, 2020
