Tok Mat: Press freedom is crucial if M’sia is to become a mature, progressive nation

MALAYSIA must defend freedom of expression and media’s independence if it ever aims to become a mature and progressive nation.

“A democratic life in Malaysia means defending the right to free speech and freedom of the press.

“The role of the press is not only to disseminate news and information. Rather, it is quintessential in providing an avenue for discourse, critique, and check and balance in all aspects of life and governance,” said Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, the Federal Court slapped online news portal, Malaysiakini with a fine of RM500,000 for contempt of court, in relation to five comments posted by its readers.

In a six-to-one majority decision, led by Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Rohana Yusuf, they ruled that the online news portal was liable over comments posted by its readers.

The decision sent shockwaves across the globe, with many alleging that it was an attempt to clampdown on media freedom.

It is to note that the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) only sought for a RM200,000 fine. It’s editor-in-chief Steven Gan was found not guilty of the same charge.

Many have voiced concerns over the decision, with former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak saying it would have far reaching repercussions on public discourse in the country.

“This will open up avenue for the Government to take the same action against others who have accounts on other sites such as Facebook, Instagram or any other outlet.

“And that is why, the Federal Court’s decision caught the attention of international media agencies,” Najib was reported saying.

Touching on the matter, Hasan said a media outlet is not only an avenue to publish current affairs but also serves a higher public purpose.

“It is an instrument which helps give voice to the will of the people, especially those who are oppressed and neglected, or those who simply wish to present new alternatives and ideas,” he said.

With that said, the Umno leader added that Malaysia must aspire towards becoming an advanced society which allows free speech, in a manner that is mature, honest, and progressive.

“And only through a free and responsible press, we can ensure transparent market economy, promote Government accountability, expose the abuse of power and moral wrongdoings, and inspire others through outstanding stories of humanity,” the Rantau state assemblyperson stressed. – Feb 20, 2021.
