Umno merger on the table at Bersatu meeting tonight, say sources

BERSATU will be discussing how the party can merge with Umno at its emergency supreme council meeting tonight, sources from both parties tell FocusM.

While there has been no agenda for tonight’s supreme council meeting, it is understood that the merger with Umno will be among the topics that will be discussed by Bersatu president and acting chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The other motion that will be finalised is the sacking of co-founder Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his faction.

News portal The Malaysian Insight earlier reported of the Bersatu-Umno merger and sources confirmed the authenticity of the report, saying that even the higher-ups at Umno have been informed about the matter.

But the move might break up Bersatu, one insider told FocusM. “Muhyiddin risks losing MPs aligned to him as they will switch allegiance to Mahathir.”

Tonight’s emergency meeting will be held at Alumni Universiti Malaya’s Clubhouse in Kuala Lumpur at 8.30 pm. Mahathir and former deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir were not invited to the event.

Also, Muhyiddin had on June 2 sacked Penang Bersatu chief Marzuki Yahya and supreme council member Akhramsyah Muamar Ubaidah Sanusi.

“I thank you and appreciate your contributions and your service throughout your tenure in the post,” Muhyiddin wrote in the letters. Marzuki still contends that he, not Hamzah Zainuddin, is the Bersatu secretary-general.
Muhyiddin and Mahathir have locked horns since Feb when the former decided to pull Bersatu out from Pakatan Harapan, leading to the collapse of the coalition and the government.

This triggered a week-long political crisis with Muhyiddin emerging as prime minister on March 1 followed by a loose pact called Perikatan Nasional which consists of Bersatu, Umno, PAS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak. – June 4, 2020
