Report: Perlis MB detained over alleged abuse of power

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli over alleged abuse of power.

Malaysiakini reported that Mohd Shukri was summoned to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to facilitate ongoing investigations related to his son who was arrested and remanded earlier.

MACC commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the matter the news portal, saying Mohd Shukri was at the MACC headquarters for questioning under Section 53(3) of the MACC Act.

“I can confirm that MACC summoned him (Mohd Shukri). He is at our headquarters now, where MACC officers are recording his statement in relation to allegations against him and his son,” he was reported as saying.

When quizzed on whether the menteri besar was under arrest, Azam noted that there was a possibility that Mohd Shukri might be held but said he could be released if MACC was satisfied with his statement.

“I do not rule out the possibility that he will be arrested under Section 53 of the MACC Act… if our investigators are satisfied with the statement he gives today, then he might be released on bail,” he remarked.

On April 24, Mohd Shukri’s son was among six individuals remanded to assist in a MACC investigation linked to the submission of false documents and claims involving RM600,000 over the past two years.

According to sources, two civil servants from the MB’s Office and the State Secretary’s Office were also detained along with contractors and owners of various companies.

“The suspects are believed to be owners of companies, contractors, and civil servants in the State Secretary’s Administration Office and the Perlis MB’s Office,” the sources said.

All six suspects, aged between 26 and 37, were detained in Perlis between 7am and 8am on April 23.

The case was being investigated for document forgery in making false claims when the project in question was not carried out, he added.

On his son’s arrest, Mohd Shukri previously said he will leave it to the discretion of the authorities to complete their investigation. – April 30, 2024
