Fahmi: Misuse of King’s image in KKB by-election campaign unrelated to any political party

THE use of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia’s pictures on a vehicle during the Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) by-election campaign is unrelated to any contesting political party, confirmed unity government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said if any wrongdoing was proven, the Attorney-General’s Chambers could initiate legal proceedings.

“The individuals have been detained. So, we leave it to the authorities to conduct investigations,” he said at a press conference after officiating the 2024 International Regulatory Conference on Monday (May 6).

“If an offence is proven, then the Attorney-General’s Chambers can proceed with the case. We will adhere to this process.

“Currently, both Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) have confirmed that this is not part of their campaign.”

Two men, including one with a criminal record, were arrested by the police to assist police investigations.

According to Hulu Selangor district police chief Ahmad Faizal Tahrim, both suspects, in their 60s, were arrested in an area in Kuala Kubu Baharu on Saturday.

Earlier today, media reported Inspector-general of police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain as saying that both individuals will be charged at the Kuala Kubu Baharu Magistrates court today.

“The charges against the two men were filed after investigation papers were submitted to the deputy public prosecutor’s office yesterday,” he said when contacted.

He added that the charges would be brought under Section 4A (1) of the Election Offences Act 1954 for malicious intent.

The arrest was made following a report lodged by a man at the Kuala Kubu Baharu police station at 6.18pm on May 4 over action by certain quarters disrespecting His Majesty by using his pictures on a vehicle along with PH flags.

Ng Sze Han, the PH campaign director for the KKB by-election, said the coalition had never directed or authorised any party campaign officer to display the image of the Agong.

“As the campaign director for the PH Kuala Kubu Bharu by-election, I want to emphasise that our team has never directed or condoned such actions by any PH campaign staff.

“The use of the YDPA’s image in the campaign is an inappropriate and unacceptable act,” Ng said in a statement today. – May 6, 2024
