When wealth comes alongside humility: How the late Ananda Krishnan wins hearts and minds

WEALTHY individuals are not difficult to find. They make certain people could spot them through the luxury watch they wear, the loud lifestyle they live or the even louder sports car they drive.

However, it would seem that the ultra rich are in a league of their own, for a good many of them live life in contrast to the loud ones at the lower level.

Take for example, Ananda Krishnan, the sixth richest man in Malaysia whose passing opened the topic about his simple and reclusive life.

Recently, a netizen drew the attention of the online community with his post on X, stating his admiration towards Ananda Krishnan for his humility.

“Even until death he did not show the world his car, house and never mentioned how much money he gave his children,” said Roman Akramovich.


Another netizen was quick to take up the topic, adding that Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg led similar lives. “The public had no inkling about their homes, the cars they used or the handbag worn by their wives,” he said.

“This is the difference between people who are really rich and those people who want to show that they are rich,” said netizen Name cannot be blank.

The comment section was filled with respect for the late mogul, with some netizens claiming that the reclusive billionaire does not give any press interview.

According to aeiou, Ananda Krishan appears to be unfettered by petty racism for he had a foundation that offered much aid to the children of diverse races.

pilKuda further claimed that Ananda Krishnan’s son rejected the inheritance worth a whopping RM25bil.

“Who could do such a thing,” said pilKuda.

Ananda Krishnan’s only son was an equally compelling character. Born into privilege, Ajahn Siripanyo made a life-altering decision at the age of 18 to become a Buddhist monk.

At the age of 18, he chose to leave behind a life of luxury to ordain as a monk after traveling to Thailand to visit his mother’s family. 

To better imagine the wealth he had renounced, note that Ananda Krishnan owned a significant business empire including investments in major companies such as Maxis, Malaysia’s largest telecommunications operator, satellite broadcaster Astro Malaysia, and oilfield services provider Bumi Armada. 

Additionally, the tycoon had stakes in Aircel in India and SLTMobitel in Sri Lanka.

Krishnan who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 86 years old had a net worth estimated at US$5.1bil, according to Forbes. —Dec 2, 2024
