1MDB: Police is probing Zeti’s husband, not MACC; Azam Baki clarifies

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said that the police are currently investigating former Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz’s husband, Datuk Tawfiq Ayman in regards to monies related to the 1Malaysia Development Board (1MDB).

“They may submit their investigation papers to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) soon. Our task was to repatriate the money from Singapore,” its chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said.

It was reported that in 2015 and 2016, the Singaporean authorities have alerted BNM of suspicious transactions involving a company belonging to Tawfiq and one of his sons.

The funds were claimed to have come from accounts linked to fugitive business man Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low,  who was behind the 1MDB scandal.

It is to note that Zeti was serving as BNM chief at the time.

In March last year, the police announced they had begun investigations into 1MDB-related funds allegedly transferred to a bank account that Tawfiq owned in Singapore.

Recently, star witness in the 1MDB trial in the US, Tim Leissner, mentioned graft involving a former Bank Negara governor’s husband during the case proceeding.

However, Leissner acknowledged that he could not independently verify whether a bribe was indeed paid.

But the statement prompted Tawfiq to issue a denial, stating that he had never received a bribe all his life. – March 1, 2022.
