23-year-old is Malaysia’s youngest Covid-19 death

A 23-YEAR-OLD woman with thyroid problems is Malaysia’s youngest patient to die from Covid-19, Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said at a press conference today.

The woman — Patient 2,864 — had close contact with other patients that made up part of the cluster from a church conference held in late Februrary in Kuching, Sarawak. Noor Hisham said she did not attend the event but is a fifth-generation infection.

She was treated at the Sarawak General Hospital on March 30 and died on April 9 at 9.42am.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said the country had registered 109 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 4,228.

About 121 Covid-19 patients had recovered and were discharged, bringing the number of total recoveries to 1,608 or 38% of total cases.

Also, two new deaths were recorded, including that of Patient 2,864. This raised the death toll to 67 with a mortality rate of 1.58%.

Of those being treated, the number of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) is 72, down from 76 yesterday. Of those in ICU, 43 are on ventilators, down from 45 yesterday. — April 9, 2020
