“Outrageous”: Netizens pan TasteAtlas for ranking M’sian food at 46 out of 50 nations surveyed!

WHILE Malaysia is seemingly divided across many lines be it race, religion and political views, one can admit to the fact that we are united when it comes to defending our food!

And experiential travel guide, TasteAtlas, is learning it the hard way that no one should ever denigrate Malaysia’s array of delectable delights, which has a blend of many Asian and Western cuisines!

In a tweet yesterday, TasteAtlas updated its World’s Cuisine Ranking as of June, ranking 50 countries with the best food in the world.

Italy, Greece, Spain, Romania and France came out as the top five, respectively. However, the “cardinal sin” the chart committed was ranking Malaysian food at number 46!

Livid over the fact that Malaysia was ranked 46 out of 50 countries listed, several netizens took to social media to berate TasteAtlas and questioned their methodology.

Leading the criticism was Southeast Asia political analyst, Bridget Welsh.

Echoing Welsh’s sentiments, user Alan added:

Responding to Alan’s comments, former health adviser to ex-prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Dr Jemilah Mahmood said: “Agree”.

According to Wikipedia, TasteAtlas is described as a “world atlas of traditional dishes, local ingredients and authentic restaurants”.

Its main office is headquartered in Sofia, Bulgaria.  It is to note that Singapore was not featured in the top 50 list.

Foodies’ wrath befall TasteAtlas

On that note, user Briyani Boi found it puzzling that Indonesia (ranked 14) and Malaysia had huge gap when it came to the food index, given both countries share similarities in their cuisines.

As of press time, TasteAtlas has limited comments on its profile Twitter despite asking public opinion on the matter. It can be viewed at www.tasteatlas.com.– June 5, 2022
