AG: “Yes, Jho Low wanted to settle with Gov’t, but we said no”

ATTORNEY-GENERAL Tan Sri Idrus Harun has confirmed news reports that fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, or Jho Low, tried to settle the ongoing charges against him with the Government.

However, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) rejected all such requests, Idrus said in a brief statement this evening.

“The AGC confirms that Jho Low, through his representatives, has made attempts to engage with the Government of Malaysia for a settlement this year.

“In these attempts, Jho Low’s representatives met with agencies of the Government of Malaysia, including the AGC.

“All offers for a settlement from Jho Low’s representatives were rejected by the AGC,” Idris said.

Earlier today, The Edge reported that Low, the alleged mastermind of the 1Malaysia Development Board (1MDB) scandal, had supposedly offered RM1.5 bil to the Malaysian government to settle his charges.

He is currently on the run and his exact whereabouts have not been ascertained, although he is rumoured to be in China.

Low has since been charged in absentia in the United States, as well as back home in Malaysia, for alleged crimes linked to 1MDB, including money laundering. – July 16, 2022
