Nasyid singer fails to quash three drug charges

NASYID composer and singer Muhammad Yasin Sulaiman has failed to quash three of his drug charges.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) rejected Yasin’s representation letter to review the charges earlier today. A letter of representation is normally sent to the AGC by an accused person to either reduce or drop the charge.

“The AGC will send an official letter to inform Yasin’s counsel Ariff Azami Hussein about its decision soon,” English daily New Straits Times reported Deputy Public prosecutor Mohd Asnawi Abu Hanipah as saying.

According to Asnawi, the trial is slated to go on in March while Ariff said he planned to file a second representation letter to the AGC soon.

The court has set the following hearing for Feb 20 and the trial is scheduled to last 15 days and will begin on March 6.

Moreover, on March 24 2022, the Petaling Jaya District Headquarters Narcotics office filed a cannabis consumption accusation against the Mimpi Laila singer.

If convicted, Yasin would be sentenced to a fine of no more than RM5,000 or a maximum of two years in jail.

Furthermore, he was also charged with possessing cannabis-type drugs weighing 193.7g and cultivating 17 cannabis plants in plastic pots at his residence at Persiaran Surian Damansara Indah Resort Homes at 5.30pm on the same date.

The drug possession charge carries life imprisonment or not less than five years with no less than 10 strokes of caning, if convicted. – Jan 11, 2023
