A case of ‘win selfie, lose vote’: Netizens have gala time poking fun at Sanusi

A PURPORTEDLY Perikatan Nasional (PN) supporter received brickbats from netizens after he teasingly rationalised that Kedahans have rejected the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) coalition by virtue of people swamping Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Sanusi Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for selfie opportunity at the weekend’s “Madani Malaysia Aidilfitri Open House with Prime Minister (PM)” event.

The Twitter user Aiman Saipullah (@aiman_saipullah) based his observation on the fact that nobody was keen to snap selfie with PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim nor Kedah’s PH chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar.

“Datuk Siti (Nurhaliza) mentioned that only 4,000 guests turned up. Too few,” he further tweeted (Editor’s note: Siti Nurhaliza was a guest artiste at the Kedah Madani Gathering which was held on the eve of the open house on April 29).

Netizen No name (@DixonnMichael) rebutted Aiman with pictorial evidence of people swamping and “rousingly welcoming” Anwar when he made a stop-over at the pre-open house Kedah Madani Gathering event on Friday (April 28).

“If you don’t have the enough (editorial) capital, look first at other articles, the internet or other news sources. How many years have the PMX (Anwar) been at the international level?” he added.

Netizen Kurt JoeCobain (@zahery1978) went on to cite former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin who famously coined the phrase menang selfie, kalah undi (literally, win selfie, lose vote) based on his (Khairy) personal experience.

“So, selfie itself is not a guarantee. Moreover, people like to selfie with jokers,” he tweeted with Ihsan (@IhsanHasni) seconding that everyone would want to have a photo taken with the Kedah MB.

“Who doesn’t want to have a photo taken with a MB who sought discount to pay off his summonses?” chided the netizen.

Mohd Azid (@AzidWhl) took a pot shot at Sanusi for not “escorting” Kedah ruler Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah at the open house event.

“Why is he not with the Kedah Sultan at the event but instead busy taking photos,” he wondered.

Netizen Ahmad Kazan (@Yatokami23) wondered if Sanusi showed up at the event merely because he had to escort the Kedah ruler. “You should feel ashamed for having attended the event uninvited but in the guise of escorting the Sultan.”

And Encik Ajib Mat (@EncikAji) summed up best when he tweeted: “Could this be the last selfie?” – May 1, 2023
