Anwar latest jibe to Tun M: “No problem declaring my assets”

THE split between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is entering another phase, with Anwar showing more clout and giving Dr Mahathir tit-for-tat answers for his comments.Responding to Dr Mahathir’s demand that he declare his assets from when he served as the deputy prime minister from 1993 to 1998, Anwar said he is ready to do so, again.“I don’t have a problem (with declaring assets). I was one of the people who did (last year). I declared RM11 mil, and out of that, RM10 mil was for a house in Segambut.“It’s not a secret, it is public knowledge,” he told reporters at the Madani Aidilfitri celebration at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur today. The Tambun MP added that it was already public knowledge that he declared RM11 mil last year before the 15th General Election. He also clarified that out of the declared amount, RM10 mil was for a house in Segambut.Anwar declared a net asset of RM11.18 mil in November last year, with RM828,667.83 in cash assets and RM10.35 mil in real estate properties.Last week, the freshly resigned Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) chairman Dr Mahathir challenged the Prime Minister to declare all of his assets to prove he is clean and not misusing his powers. He said he was shocked by Anwar’s repeated statements that many previous leaders have attained great wealth due to corruption and that he has several boxes of evidence to back his claims. With sarcasm, Dr Mahathir also said, “I shouldn’t be asked to declare my assets, as Anwar would have known through the boxes of documents containing proof of my wealth.”Moreover, Dr Mahathir is suing Anwar over alleged defamatory comments the PM made in a speech during PKR’s congress on March 18. He is claiming general damages of RM50 mil and exemplary damages of RM100 mil.The former Langkawi MP is also seeking a public apology from the PM over the comments he made. — May 13, 2023
