DRIVERS travelling to Genting Highlands may soon have to pay toll charges, as confirmed by a spokesperson from Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd, the company responsible for managing roads on the highland.
The confirmation follows the circulation of viral photos depicting a structure under construction at the Batang Kali-Gohtong Jaya road, leading to widespread speculation among netizens that it could be a toll plaza.
According to news portal Sin Chew Daily, Lingkaran Cekap spokesperson stated that the firm would oversee the toll’s operations with charges applicable only to vehicles heading up Genting Highlands and not for those descending.
However, specific details regarding the commencement date and the exact toll charges remain unconfirmed. The spokesperson clarified that Genting Malaysia Bhd constructed the roads on the highland in the mid-1960s and has been responsible for their maintenance ever since.
“Lingkaran Cekap is in charge of Genting’s roadworks, which include maintaining slopes, landslides, clearing fallen trees, trimming wild grass, maintaining sewage and streetlight systems and, most importantly, maintaining roads,” she was quoted as saying.
Moreover, addressing circulating rumours that toll operations would commence in June 2024, with charges ranging between RM2.50 and RM3, the spokesperson emphasised that further discussions are necessary before an official announcement can be made.
The toll charges once determined will reflect the expenses associated with maintaining the roads, encompassing various essential tasks.
According to Genting’s 2022 annual report, the company holds a substantial 49.4% interest in Lingkaran Cekap.
