THE debate is on with social media users, particularly those on the X platform, saying there is no need to focus on the race of a future prime minister (PM) as long as the leader of the country combats corruption and improves governance.
Recently, there has been a flurry of comments from politicians over the comments made by DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang who said a non-Malay can become the PM of Malaysia.
PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is of the opinion that Malaysia’s PM will continue to be a Malay.
“Either from the government or the opposition bloc, the candidate will be Malay.
“So, let’s move forward, safeguard the rights of the people and protect the interests of all citizens, all ethnicities, and all regions,” he told reporters after prayers at the Al-Kauthar Mosque, Bandar Baru Bangi yesterday (Dec 15).
However, the discussion on social media revolves around the idea of a non-Malay becoming the PM, emphasising the need for meritocracy and patriotism over ethnicity in politics.
Users express frustration with corrupt politicians and call for a critical evaluation of political leaders, regardless of their ethnic background.
Some compare the track record of Malay and Chinese Prime Ministers in Singapore, in different contexts, highlighting the importance of governance and anti-corruption efforts.
Others question the motives of certain individuals who manipulate racial sentiments for personal gain, emphasising the need for genuine public service.

It’s possible but the probability is close to zero….and will never go up. That’s because no sane non-Malay will ever want that job. LKS made a statement of fact not one based on the current reality. Muhyiddin is playing up racial issues again.
