THE Klang Hokkien and Selangor Gan Clan associations will join forces in an attempt to create a new Malaysian record with a 2024-foot-long artistic rendition of a zodiac dragon.
This is in conjunction with the upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations to welcome the Year of the Dragon. The two Chinese associations will organise a large-scale zodiac art creation under the theme ‘Twelve Scenes of the Dragon’.
This event will take place on Jan 28 from 8am to 3pm at the Klang Hokkien Association, promising a unique cultural feast for the public.
The two associations had previously collaborated to create a 600-foot-long scroll featuring the Year of the Monkey, a 115-foot-long scroll depicting the auspicious rooster, and a 700-foot-long scroll illustrating the prosperity of the dog. These events took place at the Selangor Gan Clan Association’s Ink Heritage Cultural Centre between 2016 and 2018.
There will also be a spring calligraphy competition taking place on the same date.
“Thanks to the Ink Heritage Cultural Centre for concurrently organising the Spring Calligraphy Competition. The tradition of spring calligraphy has a long history in Chinese culture.
“Despite the advancement of technology, although we can easily find spring couplets online, they cannot compare to the cultural and artistic significance of hand-written calligraphy,” said Klang Hokkien Association president Datuk Wu Yalie.
He emphasised that spring calligraphy must be handwritten to convey its true meaning and cultural significance. He hopes that the Chinese community will continue to promote the tradition of handwritten spring calligraphy, ensuring the continuity and prosperity of this cultural heritage.
Members of the public are invited to join in this cultural event, showcasing the vibrant melting pot traditions of this wonderful country. – Jan 25, 2023
