ISLAMIST party PAS and its allies in the Perikatan Nasional (PN) are fighting hard against the Apex Court ruling decision to annul 16 provisions in the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019 saying it is a “dark day in history for Muslims” in the country.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the apex court’s decision is also capable of endangering Syariah enactments in other states.
“We are very saddened today. This is a ‘Black Friday’ for Syariah law, that’s all we can say.
“When a state’s Syariah criminal law is annulled, it puts the law in 14 other states in a precarious position,” he was reported as saying.
Commenting on the Apex Court decision, netizens are pointing out that there may be a huge difference between Syariah laws and civil laws in the punishment for some crimes.
Netizen @jllmisai who has more than 78,000 followers on the X platform showed what he said is a disparity in the laws, asking why some people are defending the Syariah laws that punish offenders of sexual abuse against animals for 2 years while the Civil laws have a 20-year jail time.
The post from the user garnered more than 450,000 views with a large array of comments from followers.
Another user, @AxtinJ urged the depoliticisation of the topic, saying the punishment under the Syariah laws is what the Parliament has agreed upon.
Many users are saying this issue is all about politics whereas it should not be politicised and the X user @YassinIrfan concurs, adding that everyone has a conspiracy to expose in their victories. – Feb 10, 2024
