X users against the idea of “smoking zones” in restaurants

THE controversial ban on smoking in most public areas has been proven popular and unpopular since it was implemented. Now that Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad has said new ‘smoking zones’ might be allowed, the internet is buzzing mostly with disapproval. For the most part, a lot of Malaysians seem keen to ban smoking cigarettes in crowded public spaces. However, those who smoke tend to break the rules rather frequently. With the Health Ministry possibly implementing designated smoking zones outside some premises, X users seem to be vehemently against the idea.

X users are stating that the government is now backtracking on its previous provisions. Some users are saying that the rights of non-smokers outweigh the rights of smokers themselves. But the logic behind this issue is that most affordable outdoor eateries are allowing their customers to smoke openly anyway.

Netizens who are neutral towards the situation state that there will be people who are both happy and unhappy about this. Other countries are allowing people to smoke publicly, but in strict, dedicated smoking areas only.

Furthermore, even Singapore has this rule implemented by giving smokers a place to smoke without bothering others.

Others stated that it isn’t wrong for someone to have a cigarette. Another topic of discussion is that the amount of sugar and calories in the food we eat is also unhealthy. Regardless, it all boils down to the choices people make. The public ban on smoking was seemingly not well thought out, as there were no alternatives in place for smokers. – Feb 18, 2024
