INSPECTOR-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has confirmed that the investigation into PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s remarks has been forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) for further action.
Razarudin informed Berita Harian that the police are now awaiting instructions from the AGC regarding the case.
Earlier in the week, police spent an hour recording Hadi’s statement at the Bukit Aman police headquarters.
The investigation is being conducted under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and the Communication and Multimedia Act 1988, in response to Hadi’s remarks made on Feb 20 regarding upholding Islam, where he purportedly addressed various parties including Malay rulers.
The Marang MP’s statement followed the Federal Court’s decision to invalidate Kelantan’s 16 shariah criminal provisions.
Moreover, Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah cautioned against statements that could potentially divide Muslims in the country. He expressed his disappointment, stating that the remarks were uncivilised and did not align with the cultural norms of the Malays, who typically express their views with respect and decorum especially when addressing Malay rulers.
Hadi, in turn, responded with a letter expressing gratitude to the Selangor Ruler on Tuesday (Mar 5) before being questioned by the police.
However, the contents of the letter have not been disclosed to the public. Hadi’s special officer and Bachok MP Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman declined to provide further details regarding the letter. – March 8, 2024
