THE Sarawak government has voiced reservations regarding the extensive personal information demanded by the Central Database Hub (PADU), according to the Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He disclosed that the matter had been deliberated within the state Cabinet, with plans to request alterations tailored to Sarawak’s needs.
“We have our reservations. We are not saying we are not supportive. If it is with good intentions, of course we will support PADU.
“But when it comes to Sarawak, there are some pertinent matters that we want (the Economy Ministry) to clarify and probably certain details it doesn’t have to ask for,” he told reporters after launching the 27th Rainforest World Music Festival today.
Moreover, Abdul Karim highlighted the extensive nature of the personal data required by PADU including sensitive details such as bank accounts and investments. Expressing concern, he stated the importance of citizen privacy.
“I don’t think that is the proper way to treat citizens. All of us have a right to privacy,” he said.
Questioning the necessity of PADU, Abdul Karim pointed out existing systems like eKasih, designed to identify and aid the impoverished.
He also urged the government to exercise caution in implementing PADU, advocating for a more targeted approach rather than a blanket requirement for registration.
“If PADU is meant to help the poor, let the poor register. But don’t go across the board requiring everybody to register,” he added. – March 22, 2024
