Health Minister announces end of HSO requirement for COVID-19 patients

HEALTH Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad announced significant revisions to the handling of COVID-19 positive cases under Malaysia’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in a recent parliamentary response.

Effective immediately, individuals testing positive for COVID-19 will no longer be subjected to the Home Surveillance Order (HSO), marking a departure from previous protocols.

“COVID-19 positive individuals will be treated the same way as any other respiratory infections and will no longer be given HSO,” said the minister.

Dr Dzulkefly noted that COVID-19 positive individuals will now be managed similarly to other respiratory infections.

Despite the change, he cautioned that these individuals can still transmit the virus and stressed the importance of social responsibility. This includes staying home, adhering to public health measures, and minimising close interactions when necessary particularly if venturing outside for essential reasons or seeking medical attention.

“Medical certificates and hospital referrals will be given based on the evaluation of a medical officer.”

Moreover, individuals experiencing respiratory symptoms must wear face masks at healthcare facilities, crowded places, or poorly ventilated spaces. Healthcare workers are also mandated to wear face masks in healthcare settings and during patient interactions.

The updated guidelines come amidst rising COVID-19 cases regionally, reflecting Malaysia’s proactive approach to managing the ongoing pandemic and safeguarding public health.

Dr Dzulkefly’s remarks were in response to inquiries raised by Kuala Langat MP Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi regarding preparations amidst increasing COVID-19 cases in neighbouring Singapore. – July 5, 2024
