UMNO shows why its assemblyman will be sued for RM100m for joining PAS

UMNO secretary general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki shared a declaration letter signed by Rembia state assemblyman Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis that says he must pay RM100 mil and resign from his seat for jumping ship to PAS.

Thus, Dr Asyraf said the statement by Jailani that he was not bound to the party after leaving UMNO for the PAS is not correct. He said the declaration signed by Jailani is binding since all candidates had to sign it in front of a Commissioner of Oaths and be seen by witnesses.

“The second point (in the signed statement) says (a candidate who jumps ship) has to pay Barisan Nasional (BN) RM100 mil.

“In effect, we already have a case with the High Court ruling that the former PKR vice president Datuk Zuraida Kamarudin was ordered to pay RM10 mil (for defecting),” he said in a video uploaded on Facebook on Saturday (July 20).

According to him, in the statement, it is clearly stated that if a candidate intends to change parties or change course from BN, UMNO, MIC or MCA wants to become an independent state legislative assembly (DUN), the candidate promises to resign as a member BN, UMNO or DUN so that the state election can be held.

On Tuesday (July 16), PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said that Jailani, who was previously suspended from membership in UMNO for six years, was allowed to join PAS.

He noted that Jailani’s entry into the party took effect in June last year before the Melaka DUN passed the Anti-Party Jumping Act called the Melaka State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2023 on July 31, 2023. – July 20, 2024
