Netizens scorn Najib for unpaid taxes of RM1.7b

FORMER jailed premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak has yet to clarify the nearly RM1.7 bil income tax debt he owes to the nation and netizens are unhappy with this.

The Finance Ministry (MOF) last week stated that the matter remains unresolved, and the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has taken appropriate action.

“Proceedings are ongoing, and the next hearing is scheduled for July 29, 2024, at the High Court of Insolvency in Kuala Lumpur,” said the ministry in a written parliamentary response to a question posed by Jelutong MP RSN Rayer.

However, netizens state the authorities will not give chances and privileges to a normal citizen, as the LHDN (tax man) will look into it heavily and more severe consequences will be handed to them. They want to know why Najib is being given so much leeway on his tax payment avoidance.

X users feel that this instance is unfair, as important individuals are given different treatment in comparison to the rest.

Others are criticising the current coalition government for not cracking down on Najib on this issue. They added that the government has reduced his jail sentencing, and this is not sitting well with some individuals.

Additionally, some brought up the point that the people themselves are closing their eyes to Najib’s unpaid taxes.

Some X users are defending the government as well, saying it is unfair to attack Pakatan Harapan for every single move they make. They added that Najib is still heralded as a hero despite having so many cases against him.

Netizens also said that if he has to pay RM1.7 bil in taxes, how much was his actual income when he was the country’s prime minister?

Moreover, X users added that LHDN would have calculated his income thoroughly for them to come up with this number. – July 20, 2024
