Goh Jin Wei wins Malaysians’ hearts if not medal at Paris Olympics 2024

PEOPLE who often make excuses or procrastinate when trying to achieve their dreams should take a leaf from Goh Jin Wei’s book, our national women’s single badminton player at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

After all, behind every Olympian is a great story of dedication for they strove day and night, honing their skills to compete on the international arena.

As pointed out by social media influencer Giarc Nibisna 🇲🇾🌺(@craigansibin) who must be a badminton fan himself, it was Goh’s herculean yet unique sacrifice which stood out among many other athletes.

The 24-year-old Penangite’s uphill battle with her own health – having undergone a colectomy surgery in 2019 to remove 1.5-metre of her large intestine – instead of muscle pain, sprain, fracture or tendonitis is itself a handicap that would have made many shuttlers hang up their racquets.

Although she failed to beat South Korea’s Kim Ga-eun in a nail-biting final group encounter at the Adidas Arena in Port de la Chapelle yesterday (July 31), her fighting spirit is a feather in her cap for anyone chasing a dream.

Unsurprisingly, many netizens came to lend their support to her.

Touched by her suffering, a concerned netizen urged the nation to find a medical specialist to help her.

Another netizen pointed out that Goh’s achievements were understated since she had to go up against opponents who were hale and hearty.

A netizen even hailed Jin Wei’s fighting spirit for bouncing back at a time when most of her peers are “in the world’s top 10 ranking today”.

One netizen, however, decided to go full TMI (too much information) by suggesting that perhaps, Goh could have competed with a stoma bag during the competition.

The user even helpfully attached an illustration to go along with her comment so that the average reader can fully grasp the meaning of a stoma bag.

Looking through the many encouraging comments, it can be easily derived that Jin Wei’s story of perseverance has won the hearts of netizens. More than that, her story is also a soft nudge on ourselves to courageously face the many challenges in our everyday lives. – Aug 1,2024
