Will TikTok rise in popularity after Youtube’s forced unskippable ads?

LATELY there are speculations of a rise of TikTok users in Malaysia arguably due to YouTube’s forced unskippable advertisements.

This observation was made by an X user who claims that the number of TikTok users are rising with further claims that YouTube wants more premium subscribers but this policy is apparently unfortunately backfiring on them.

The Original poster states that if a content creator realises that their views are less than usual, it could potentially be due to users moving to TikTok.

YouTube is generally known to have longer videos that may be more in depth.

According to a report by Caca Fly, there are over 20 million TikTok users in Malaysia alone. Most of these users are youngsters.

A majority of the users are aged between 25-34, and there are slightly more males on the platform than females.

Additionally, some users suggested that closing the video and re-opening the video may cause the ads to be gone or changed to a shorter one.

But, it is rather clear that users are not happy with being force fed with unskippable advertisements that can last over 60 seconds.

Others complained that YouTube has increased the prices for their premium ad-free service by a few Ringgit.

They state that there are interesting documentaries and talk shows available on the platform, but is it worth paying RM20 a month for an ad-free experience on the platform that is technically still free?

One user suggested using the Brave browser, as there are apparently no pop-ups or advertisements when using the browser.

But, for the most part, social media users are either on the app itself, or are using Google Chrome/Safari. Are we going to see a backlash against YouTube? – Sept 29, 2024
