Rising flood victims in Johor, Kedah, and Perak while Selangor sees decline

THE number of flood victims seeking shelter at temporary relief centers in Johor, Kedah, and Perak has increased, while Selangor has seen a slight decrease.

In Kedah, the number of evacuees at three relief centers in the Kubang Pasu and Pendang districts has surged to 338 from 100 families, up from 229 evacuees from 69 families last night.

Johor recently reports 808 evacuees from 240 families, a rise from 195 evacuees from 60 families reported at 8 PM yesterday.

The districts of Batu Pahat and Pontian are among the latest affected, prompting the opening of several relief centers last night.

Perak has also experienced an increase, with 304 evacuees from 83 families, compared to 234 evacuees from 64 families the previous night.

Conversely, Selangor has reported a decline in evacuees, decreasing from 281 individuals from 57 families last night to 248 from 50 families this morning.

On another note, the upcoming monsoon season is anticipated to bring four to six major episodes of continuous heavy rainfall, particularly affecting the East Coast.

Malaysian Meterological Department deputy director (strategic) Ambun Dindang stated during the National Climate Forum 2024 that significant rainfall associated with the northeast monsoon is expected to impact Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang between November and December.

The monsoon season is projected to commence in November and continue until March 2025.

“From December to January, we expect the heaviest rains to be concentrated in Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak,” he said. – Oct 7, 2024
